Vicuña to Ovalle

We left our camp this morning (the 11th) and drove back to Vicuña.  We are taking a dirt road up and over the mountains down to Ovalle.

Leaving the valley

We are going over the top of these mountains.

Through this kind of country

When I hear a ruckus...squawking......oh there...a small flock of the endangered burrowing parrots Lucky us!!!.

We are not alone on this road.

About the only people that live out here  are goat herders.  They are poor and are very low on the socio-economic order here in Chile.

Oops, something else lives out here as well.

This old church has become the home for some burrowing parrots as there habitat is being destroyed. The parrots burrow into the adobe along the walls.

We finally came into Ovalle,  100 km in 8 hours...pretty slow going.  We found a camping spot near a river and set up camp, ate, and crashed.
